The Bathmat

UPDATE: The bath mat weighs in at 1060 grammes!

Barry used a wide angle lens for this photo so that it made the knitting needles look really big but he forgot to think about how big it would make my hands look!

I am quite pleased with the mat. I based my pattern on the bathmat pattern in Mason-Dixon Knitting but it was meant to be made using two strands of aran/worsted weight cotton yarn using size 10mm needles but my fat needles were in size 12mm and I wasn't going to buy some new ones as big needle knitting isn't something I do on the whole. I cut strips of fabric one and quarter inches wide, sometimes I tore the fabric which is great fun but the white wouldn't tear as it had some over stitching on it. I tried to keep the strips continuous by stopping half an inch from the edge then snipped another width away and tore to the other end. To join the coloured strips I used a reef knot. I like the raggy knots! It is VERY heavy..I'll weigh it tomorrow, it is a great stash busting exercise if you have some fabric lying around that you know you won't make into anything. The patterns on the fabrics don't show, so just go for the colours that you like. I think it would also be an excellent way of using up old cotton sheets and duvet covers. No matter how many blocks I add this mat is destined to be square, I'd change the size of the middle block next time.....if I ever have enough material in my fabric stash ever again!

you know...it really is very heavy. I am usually knitting up the other end of the sofa so I can rest my sore shoulder on the arm of the sofa, but Barry didn't like the composition!

Funny pic, yes you do look like a Borrower! I loved the film, so funny.... I like the idea of using up fabric in this way, that's another project to add to my growing list.I'll be on the lookout for sheets at the Boot sales :)
